Requirements

To meet the basic qualifications for this role you will have:
  • A bachelor’s degree in Business or a related field

  • A level of technical aptitude to successfully interface with Suppliers and the Engineering team about technical issues

Role Overview

Reporting to the Purchasing Manager, you will join our tight-knit team of Buyers as the only Commodity Specialist. You’ll basically act as a right hand to the Purchasing Manager, with responsibility for the strategic side of the supply chain including cost savings and on-hand inventory. Your key goals will be to build strategy for upcoming orders and programs to make a plan for the Buyers to follow, and to act as the main manager of inventory. However, everything we do takes a team approach, so you’ll need to take a balanced approach to ensuring you’re doing the right things for the business while meeting the needs of the team.

On a day-to-day basis you’ll deal with any quality issues that require a higher level of expertise, handle negotiations when there’s a PO with a price increase, and you may even be called upon to place some orders, but that would be rare. Most of your time will be spent with purchase approval requests, working with suppliers to ensure we’re getting the best price on any purchases over $5K and that we’re scheduling the inventory properly. In addition, you’ll spend a good deal of time working on any long term agreements and completing the project planning that goes into those.

Some of your specific tasks will be to:
  • Work closely with Buyers to ensure purchase price variance, purchase approval requests and other negotiations are completed in a timely manner and provide the best total value solution.
  • Negotiate agreements with suppliers that ensure best terms, delivery, quality and cost.
  • Aggressively pursue cost reductions from suppliers for existing and new products.
  • Develop strong relationships with suppliers. Meet with and travel to suppliers as needed.Develop and consolidate business relations.
  • Conduct onsite supplier evaluations
  • Train departments towards the best interests of the company and initiate process improvements.
  • Work with the Purchasing team to help make inventory decisions for strategic buys and cost savings.
  • Provide analysis of historical and forecasted product demand to use in supply agreements with key suppliers.
  • Solicit product quotes from suppliers for new and existing programs.
  • Provide sourcing strategy at new product development meetings.
  • Identify and develop new suppliers. Make recommendations to add or divest suppliers to the Approved Supplier List.
  • Thoroughly analyze and make recommendations for product/service suppliers for new and existing programs based on cost, quality, delivery and customer service.
  • Work with buyers to initiate first-run production purchase orders.
  • Review product drawing packages and obtain quotes from approved and prospective suppliers for prototype, ramp-up and full production.
  • Project manage programs from prototype to final production.
  • Work with Supplier Quality to monitor supplier performance through key metrics–Initiate corrective actions as required to address operational issues (Quality and Delivery).
  • Ensure all necessary components and product are available and ready for production for new product development introductions.
  • Work with Engineering to recommend product and/or supplier alternatives for improved manufacturability and reduced costs.
